What is an Approved Handler?

An Approved Handler is someone who is qualified to work with commercial grade fireworks (1.4G and higher) and knows how to operate and manage a commercial fireworks display at any stage of the year.

Newly introduced by
ERMA (Environmental Risk Management Authority) is the Controlled Substance Licence (CSL). ERMA states that anyone who is certified as an Approved Handler after 1 July 2009 will require a CSL if they wish to purchase, sell, transport or possess Class 1 Explosives alone. If they wish to work under the supervision of someone who either was certified before this date, or someone who holds a CSL, then they do not require one.

ERMA will certify you as an Approved Handler Pyrotechnics, a qualification valid for 5 years. The more shows you complete, as part of your work experience, the higher your level of certification will be. As an Approved Handler you will have full responsibility of organising and running a pyrotechnic display. This includes complying to all regulations, the purchase of pyrotechnic equipment, the task of completing all permits prior to the event and the overall management of the show, all while knowing how to adhere to the general safety and protection of yourself, the environment and those around you.
